Professor Teresa Amabile, Professor of Business Administration in the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School has spent the better part of her professional life researching creativity and innovation. As per her research, there are 3 components of creativity - 1. Expertise 2. Creative Thinking Skills and 3. Intrinsic task motivation.
She also says that a 'highly intrinsically motivated individual is likely to draw skills from other domains or apply great effort to acquiring necessary skills in the target domain. In other words, Professor Teresa's research backs up my long held view on the subject of creative breakthroughs and aha moments - that it is the desire to overcome a clear and present challenge that fuels creativity and leads to major breakthroughs.
